Charles County is Celebrating Black History Month on the Big Screen

Our County's own DOME THEATER!

February 10, 2024

Did you know that Charles County has a Dome Theater that is open to the public?

The James E. Richmond Science Center at St. Charles High School has a full dome theater that hosts shows and field trips for schools, groups, and the public! It is seriously impressive inside! I have been there more times than I can count with field trips and visiting with my family.

The science center is honoring Black History Month by showing videos all month that display the courage, honor, and passion of our African American population.

These shows are great for homeschoolers, family visits, or just anyone who is looking for something to do. Keep in mind, since the science center is attached to a school, it is only open to the public outside of school hours.

To view the complete list of shows, you can view their website HERE.

Here are the shows this month that Honor Black History Month:

1. Still we Rise: 40 Min, 10+ to Adult.  February 15February 17February 28

This Science Center original Black History Month program features influential African Americans in flight.

2. Civil Rights to Star Wars: 40 Min, 10+ to Adult. February 17, February 22

A journey through time from Rosa Parks’ arrest through the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Relive the Montgomery bus boycott, the F.W. Woolworth Lunch Counter, and other non-violent protests. Join Dr. Martin Luther King, from his incarceration at the Birmingham Jail, to his memorable speech at the March on Washington. Experience the despair of King’s death. Rejoice in the obstacles which have been overcome: first with Americans’ landing on the Moon, our missions on the Space Shuttle, and concluding with our reach into the science-fiction heavens of Star Wars.

3. Follow the Drinking Gourd: 26 Min, 9+ to Adults, February 21

Retrace the steps of slaves, from their imprisonment in Africa, their transport across the Atlantic, their auction and enslavement in the south, to their bid for freedom via the Underground Railroad. Our original fulldome production of The Drinking Gourd akes the dangerous journey from Mobile, Alabama – tracking the stars and symbols etched on tree trunks – up to the Ohio River, across to Paducah, Kentucky; and onto freedom in the north. Meet operatives along the way, including Peg-Leg Joe, the old man waitin’ to carry you to freedom. Look into the night sky, unlock the secret code shared between the slaves, and follow The Drinking Gourd.
